If Doughnuts had Lobbyists

Tonight I rescued two donuts.

I had no intention of being a hero. I’m just an ordinary guy who wants to do the world some good in my own little way.

All week the celebrity spokespeople exhorted me to stop in and do my part. They described the horrific conditions that baked goods suffer each day. Thrown into a deep fryer then frosted and covered in peanuts or jimmies, they are then crammed in tight rows on trays with other unfortunate pastries. I nearly wept at their treatment

They wait in silent lines until someone, anyone, takes them home forever.

But some times the people don’t come. “Tomorrow I will for sure” or “Tomorrow when I have to bring something for the sales meeting I’ll stop in” they say. But tomorrow never comes for a donut.

Of course, the bakery doesn’t have room for all of the donuts. Sure they may have  looked good early in the morning when they were fresh out of the deep fryer, still trembling with icing on the trays. But now it’s nearly nine o’clock at night. The store will be closing soon and a whole new batch will be on the trays in the morning. No room for old donuts in this business. I can barely describe the horror when the old donuts are bagged up and tossed into the dumpster by the pimply-faced kid with the paper hat.

It doesn’t have to be this way for all unwanted donuts. For only eighty cents a day you can take one of these baked goods home knowing that you’ve saved them from a terrible fate.

My own story involves two peanut donuts I bought. Late at night, wanting some coffee, I saw nearly a whole tray of peanut donuts just waiting for purchase. I would have taken all of them if I could, but I went home knowing that I did as much as I could. Tomorrow is another day and I just might be able to be a hero once again.

Isn’t it time that you did your part? Take some donuts home with you today. You’ll be glad you did.
